Having started the course at school and completed it as a Leader with Ahorey Boys’ Brigade—where he serves as leader in charge of the Junior Section—Robert's qualifying activities included a mountaineering expedition in the Sperrins Mountains and a residential course project at the SHARE centre in Lisnaskea.

Alongside his Boys' Brigade and award commitments, he plays in goal for Armagh City in the Irish League B Division.
