The case of a county Armagh man charged with serious child cruelty including strangulation, is to be escalated to crown court for trial.

The accused, who is aged in his thirties but cannot be identified to protect the child, is charged with intentionally applying pressure to the throat or neck of the child affecting his ability to breathe or the flow of blood to his brain and threatening to kill him.

It is further alleged he wilfully assaulted the child in a manner likely to cause him unnecessary suffering or injury to health.

The charges relate to an incident on May 2, although no further details surrounding the circumstances have been revealed to date.

A detective constable from the PSNI Public Protection Unit previously told Craigavon Magistrates Court the changes could be connected.

The accused spoke only to confirm his identity and that he understood the charges against him.

At the most recent court sitting a prosecuting lawyer said the case has been directed to proceed on indictment at trial.

District Judge Barney McElhome adjourned the case until November 27 when a committal date to transfer to crown court is to be fixed.

The accused was remanded on continuing bail.
