Markethill gets £2m environmental boost as contractors start work on town centre improvements

The £2 million environmental improvement scheme in Markethill is expected to remain on site until spring 2027, with contractors Northstone working in a phased programme to upgrade paving, repair kerbs and install new street furniture.
Markethill is set to benefit from the final phase of a £2 million environmental improvement scheme, with contractors now on site to begin work in the town centre.
The project forms part of the Small Settlements Regeneration Programme and is funded through a partnership involving the Department for Communities, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, the Department for Infrastructure and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.
Speaking at the launch of the latest phase of works, Alderman Paul Berry said he was pleased to see the project progressing in Markethill after supporting the initiative through council several years ago.
"I was delighted to attend the launch of the final phase of a £2 million Environmental Improvement Scheme for the rural town of Markethill, with contractors now on site," he said.
Since the programme began, improvement works have already been completed in Rathfriland and Gilford, with Markethill becoming the final location to benefit from the investment.
Contractors Northstone are expected to remain on site until spring 2027.
Works have commenced outside the Dolphin Takeaway and will continue along Main Street in a phased programme. The scheme will include upgraded paving, kerb repairs and the installation of new street furniture aimed at enhancing the appearance and functionality of the town centre.
Alderman Berry said the investment would provide long-term benefits for residents, businesses and visitors alike.
"Work has commenced outside the Dolphin Takeaway and will progress up Main Street in a phased manner. The project will focus on upgrading paving, repairing kerbs and installing new street furniture to enhance the town centre environment for residents, businesses and visitors," he said.
Welcoming the investment, Alderman Berry described Markethill as a thriving town that continued to make an important contribution to the wider area.
"Markethill is a busy, thriving town, punching well above its weight, and it is vital that it receives support from all the relevant agencies going forward," he added
