South Ulster Sinfonia brings cinema sound to Tannaghmore Primary School

The family-friendly event invites both children and adults to dress as their favourite characters from the featured films, with a diverse programme featuring music from well-known films and musicals.
The South Ulster Sinfonia will bring the sound of the cinema to Tannaghmore Primary School on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at 7:30 pm, with a concert designed to appeal to families, film fans, and people who may never have considered attending an orchestral concert before.
Led by Brigid Walton at the school, the community orchestra of nearly 70 musicians—drawing members from across Northern Ireland and the border counties—will perform music from well-known films and musicals including James Bond, Out of Africa, Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park, Wicked, The Chronicles of Narnia, Mamma Mia, and My Fair Lady.
The diverse programme also features Johann Strauss’s classic works The Blue Danube and the Radetzky March, alongside Reel Fiddlin’, a selection of traditional tunes comprising The Wind That Shakes the Barley, The De’il Amang the Tailors, and The Soldier’s Joy. Additionally, violist Edel Moore will perform the jazz standard “Misty” and Puccini’s “O Mio Babbino Caro.”
Musical Director Philip Walton, a violist with the Ulster Orchestra, explained that the programme was chosen deliberately to open doors for a wider audience, noting that hearing familiar cinematic themes played live by a full orchestra brings a unique energy.
The family-friendly event invites both children and adults to dress as their favourite characters from the featured films.
Violist Eleanor McGillie, who returned to playing with the orchestra after a 20-year hiatus having started in P4, highlighted that the concert offers a wonderful opportunity for parents to introduce children to a live orchestra at close quarters and hopes to inspire young budding musicians and returning players alike.
