John McEntee, a former Armagh and Crossmaglen All-Ireland winner, has been appointed as the new manager of the Monaghan senior football team, bringing a wealth of experience and leadership to the role.

Former Armagh and Crossmaglen All-Ireland winner John McEntee has been appointed as the new manager of the Monaghan senior football team, succeeding Gabriel Bannigan, who stepped down in controversial circumstances in August.

McEntee is no newcomer to Farney footballing circles, having managed club side Inniskeen for the last four years, leading them to SFC final appearances in 2023 and 2025 after previously steering Clontibret to a Monaghan SFC title in 2019. The 49-year-old is widely celebrated as a driving force behind the golden eras of both his county and his legendary club, having amassed 13 Armagh SFCs, 7 Ulster Club titles, and 5 All-Ireland SFCs during an unprecedented club run between 1995 and 2011.

A critical part of Armagh’s historic 2002 All-Ireland SFC victory, McEntee also won six Ulster SFCs and a National Football League title before retiring in 2007. Playing primarily as a centre half-forward, he was renowned for his intelligence, leadership, and playmaking ability, dominating the game alongside his identical twin brother, Tony McEntee.

Welcoming the appointment, a Monaghan County Board statement read: “John McEntee brings a wealth of experience, leadership and commitment to the role and we look forward to working with him as preparations begin for the challenges ahead.”
